Hinge is the nexus between the part and the whole. Portraying elements separated from their representational qualities depicts alienation as a state of isolation from an entity to which one belongs. As shadows are connected to light through an involuntary existence, the limb is encompassed by its singular effect on the entirety of the canvas. The impact of the part being great enough to change the entirety of the whole illustrates individualism as a facade. This work challenges the illusion of independence, as both shadow and limb make an indelible mark on the canvas, framing society as the culmination of individual actions. Flexed toes accompanied by a resting shadow convey the uttermost end of an action and testimony that the action was performed. Abstracting the direction of this action, makes clear its purpose—breaking through mental facades that separate the part from the whole. As if to say this is not an image of three elements, or of two elements, but of one.
