Goodluck,  2020

This image was taken near Umuagu, a village in eastern Nigeria. The subject photographed here is named after his father who passed away when he was 4 years old. Just before this image was taken we discussed the meaning-making of his connection to his father juxtaposed with vivid memories of his father fading as he ages. Lines of endurance that have formed at only 11 years of age trace the perplexities of his lived experience in black boyhood. As the man of his house, his deep and impenetrable eyes maintain the innocence of his childhood while carrying the weighted plight accompanied by simply becoming a black man. His name is Goodluck.
